Blog Introduction

The essay below, "So Old School" serves as an introduction to this travel blog and its odd creator.

I wrote the essay sometime between 2006 and 2007, when I was 17. It was later published in the Scholastic anthology "The Best Teen Writing of 2007." The essay was written after I attended a formative summer writing camp for teens, which opened my eyes to how different my own "teen voice" was in writing and just how removed my own fantasy world was from the land of normalcy. I realized after this experience that there is indeed an entire subculture of people like me who guiltily cling to the past. The term "dead" was chosen after I read Sarah Vowell's "Assassination Vacation" and reflected on the separation and cultural distance of some historical enthusiasts from the rest of popular culture.

The last lines of the essay proved to be prophetic. Despite a lot of angst, I did "grit my teeth and get my driver's license" and in only a month I will be "traveling to England and Scotland". Rest assured, I'm normally much less pretentious and set in my ways than my pesky inner life coach.

This blog will consist of semi-professional writing but may occasionally lapse into the sarcastic, silly, or weird. I hope you will enjoy joining me on this whirlwind trip through photos, writing, and maybe even some occasional Victorian ranting.
